Television writing is looking up. First, Grey’s Anatomy (see previous post) and now, How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM).
This season, they’ve introduced a plot wherein Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) tries to find his father. In a preceding episode, he sent his dad a letter. In this one, the dad (John Lithgow) drops in on Barney and attempts to reconnect.
***WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD***
Barney is resistant to the idea, especially after he finds out his dad’s “not cool.” He drinks skim milk and goes to bed at 9 p.m.—that sort of thing. The gang then stages an intervention and forces Barney to meet his father one more time. The result is bittersweet.
It really made the episode—that emotional connection HIMYM does so well despite being a comedy. As of late, it hasn’t been doing much of that successfully—till this, of course.
The comedy wasn’t completely gone though. In fact, it had a new, possibly recurring type of comedy, for the series regulars, much like the “slap bet.”
In Legendaddy, the friends go through their “gaps in knowledge.” Barney doesn’t know how to use tools, Ted can’t pronounce “chameleon,” Robin didn’t know the North Pole was real, Lily has bad aim, and Marshall can’t wink.
For Lithgow fans, we haven’t seen the last of Barney and his dad. Lithgow is set to guest star in at least one more episode on April 18.
And if you’ve been watching season 6 from the start, you know that the writers jumped ahead and showed Ted and the gang at a wedding. They didn’t reveal who was tying the knot (most likely that will be in the season finale), but Ted had the yellow umbrella—a key component in his epic search for a wife, the mother of his kids.
My bet is that it’s Rachel Bilson’s lesbian wedding. Bilson was revealed to be the roommate of Ted’s future wife and in this season, she had a girlfriend. However, the writers have thrown at least three other possibilities our way.
Another one is Ted’s engaged friend, Punchy, and Barney, who is recently interested in Nora, a girl who made it clear she wants to get hitched. Others say it’s Robin’s wedding to a future love interest, upcoming guest star and cutie Michael Trucco (Battlestar Galactica).
