As the Spice Girls once said, “Girl power!”
In addition to hiring more female stars, “Saturday Night Live” has increased its writing staff’s estrogen levels. Comedienne Jessi Klein has joined the show, resulting in a supposed total of six female “SNL” writers.
Still, “SNL” joined the bandwagon late. “Chelsea Lately” has five females on her staff of 10 while Jimmy Fallon’s late show had three women when he started out.
Meanwhile, Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel only have one on their programs. Over at CBS, Craig Ferguson brought his sister on board.
However, late-night television still has a long way to go. “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien,” “The Jay Leno Show” and the “Late Show with David Letterman” still have an all-male writing staff.
What are they waiting for? Have they forgotten about the success that Tina Fey brought “SNL”?
